Agencies Publish Compliance Guide on Information Security Standards
December 15, 2005
Circular No. 11755

To All Depository Institutions and Others Concerned
in the Second Federal Reserve District:

The federal bank and thrift regulatory agencies have announced the publication of a compliance guide for the Interagency Guidelines Establishing Information Security Standards (Security Guidelines).

The compliance guide summarizes the obligations of financial institutions to protect customer information and illustrates how certain provisions of the Security Guidelines apply to specific situations. The guide, which is not a substitute for the Security Guidelines, provides detailed explanations of the core terms used in the Security Guidelines.

The guide also offers information to help financial institutions assess risks, design and implement an information security program, properly dispose of customer and consumer information, respond to incidents of unauthorized access to customer information and oversee service providers that have access to customer information.
