Why the Fed?
As the central bank, the work we do is different as are our perspectives. Our businesses are varied and there are so many opportunities to learn. I’ve been working at the Fed for over 20 years and have moved around the institution a number of times, holding jobs in six separate and distinct business areas. Each move was an opportunity to learn about a new business. The Fed is an institution that really champions development of its staff and provides opportunities to learn and grow professionally.
As chief operating officer for the Market Operations Monitoring and Analysis area, I oversee an array of administrative matters related to our day-to-day activities with a focus on maintaining operational and analytical excellence in the conduct of our various policy and operational responsibilities.
Challenges and Rewards of My Job
I wind up working on a number of issues at any given time. Sometimes, it can be a challenge to manage competing priorities! Luckily, I have terrific colleagues and the Bank’s collaborative culture provides an environment where people work well together even when they disagree. It’s always rewarding to work through issues whether as an individual contributor or as part of a team. It’s particularly rewarding to know that your ideas can become solutions to real problems.
How Is the Fed Unique?
The Fed has a long history as an institution involved in understanding and implementing public policy actions. For those of us who studied public policy as a discipline, the Fed offers a unique opportunity to see the application of theory in what we do every day.
