Why the Fed?

My interest in working at the Fed started some time after college. With a degree in Economics, and a strong interest in international affairs, the Fed seemed like a logical place to work. After I started working here, I quickly learned that the Fed offers much more than just the excitement of exposure to all aspects of the financial world. It is an opportunity to meet and learn from a group of extremely intelligent people with widely diverse backgrounds and expertise. With such abundant and continuous opportunities to learn, I feel that the Fed is like a big university, only rather than paying tuition, they pay us.

My Responsibilities

I work in the International Affairs group which serves as the protocol office for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. We are responsible for relationships with foreign central banks and the official sector. More specifically, we arrange programs for central bankers, foreign government officials, and international based educational programs in an effort to facilitate the exchange of ideas and perspectives.

Challenges and Rewards of My Job

One of the greatest challenges of my job is that during times when the markets are volatile and or during a financial crisis, central bankers, government officials, and private sector individuals from all over the world want to meet with Fed staff to get their opinions and predictions.

Without hesitation, the greatest reward of my job is having the opportunity to meet with people from all over the world and learn how major economic and political events affect their respective countries in very different ways.

How Is the Fed Unique?
For an institution with such great responsibilities and influence over the world economy, it still manages to give priority to its people. The Fed offers employees a work-life balance that isn’t found in many comparable institutions. The benefits are great and there are opportunities for career growth and even career change.
