Why the Fed?

I chose to work at the Fed because it is a prestigious institution where high quality economic research supports a public mission I believe is important. Working at the Fed allows me to develop skills I need to pursue a PhD in economics, while actively contributing to public policy.

My Responsibilities

As an assistant economist, I work closely with Bank Economists on a variety of research projects. Our research helps inform the President of the Bank about the state of the economy, supports the efforts of other areas of the Bank such as the Markets and Bank Supervision Groups, and is published in academic journals. My daily work involves reading academic papers, learning economic theory and econometric methods, programming in Unix and various statistical packages, creating presentation materials, writing reports and finding creative solutions to problems and questions that arise in the course of our research.

How Is the Fed Unique?
The Fed is a unique mix of governmental body and corporation, which is fascinating and useful to someone trying to determine what career path to pursue. One professor in college recommended exploring positions in the public and private sectors, as well as in an academic environment before fixing on a particular career path. I feel that the Research and Statistics Group has elements of all three classifications. Working here has helped me to determine which path I prefer.
