Title: Building a Banking System
in Iraq
Description: In the wake of the overthrow of Saddam
Hussein, the New York Fed was asked to provide assistance
in setting up a safe, sound, and market-oriented banking
system in Iraq. A variety of legal, financial, and cultural
issues make this task a daunting one. This presentation,
offered by a New York Fed attorney who was sent to Iraq
soon after the American occupation, will discuss the
Iraqi banking system, the steps that have been taken
to improve that system, and the challenges that lay
ahead. These topics will be addressed in the course
of a presentation of pictures from Iraq that shed light
on conditions there and the life of an advisor to the
Coalition Provisional Authority.
